Redesigning a Global B2B eCommerce Platform

Overview

Future Electronics is one of the world’s largest electronic component distributors, serving over 25,000 customers globally across industries such as automotive, energy, automation, and consumer electronics. Their B2B platform, FutureElectronics.com, enables real-time inventory management, ordering, and BOM workflows in multiple languages and currencies.

As Lead UX/UI Designer, I led the transformation of several critical areas of the platform, including the BOM Management Tool, Site Navigation, Homepage, Product Pages, and the Cart & Checkout flow. The objective was to reduce friction, enhance engagement, and increase conversion across key user journeys.

The Challenge

The platform faced significant usability challenges. User research and analytics revealed multiple friction points in high-impact areas:

  • Disorganized and overwhelming navigation made it difficult to find parts.
  • The BOM Management Tool was cluttered and inefficient.
  • The mobile experience was weak for on-site users.
  • Homepage promotions were underperforming.
  • Product detail pages were outdated and lacked clarity.
  • Localization was inconsistent across regions.
  • The cart and checkout experience was outdated and had high drop-off rates.

The Solutions

1. BOM Management Tool Redesign

Problem: Users struggled to upload, edit, and manage large component lists due to a dense UI and unclear workflows.

Solution: Introduced a tabbed interface to clearly separate tasks (Upload, Edit, Export). Improved table usability and added smarter error handling for faster, more accurate part matching.

Impact:

  • Reduced task completion time by 30%
  • Increased tool adoption and positive feedback from B2B users
  • Decreased support requests related to BOM errors

2. Navigation Redesign

Problem: Navigation menus were overloaded and unclear—especially on mobile—making it difficult for users to access key areas of the site.

Solution: Rebuilt the information architecture (IA) and introduced a mobile-first design, including a slide-out side menu and a top utility toolbar for quick access to region, language, currency, cart, and account.

Impact:

  • Reduced mobile bounce rate by 15%
  • Improved task efficiency—users located tools like account and cart faster in usability testing
  • Delivered a more consistent, streamlined experience across devices

3. Homepage Carousel Design

Problem: Promotional content lacked visibility and failed to drive engagement.

Solution: Designed a flexible, multi-panel carousel to showcase promotions, featured products, and company news. Integrated with the CMS to allow the content team to update it independently.

Impact:

  • Increased homepage engagement by 25%
  • Enabled marketing team to manage banners without developer support
  • Received positive internal feedback on usability and flexibility

4. Product Page Redesign

Problem: Users had difficulty comparing technical specifications and accessing key purchasing information—such as pricing, availability, and product alternatives.

Solution: Consolidated essential product data into a clean, modular layout. Enhanced mobile performance and improved accessibility to meet WCAG compliance standards.

  • Improved clarity in side-by-side product comparisons
  • Reduced support tickets related to spec sheets and availability

5. Cart & Checkout Optimization

Problem: The checkout experience was not optimized for large orders or repeat purchases—both common in B2B transactions.

Solution:

  • Streamlined cart layout with inline editing, saved carts, and quick-remove features
  • Simplified checkout flow into logical, step-by-step progress
  • Persisted address, shipping, and payment information for returning users
  • Improved mobile UX with collapsible sections and real-time visual validation

Impact:

  • Reduced cart abandonment by 18%
  • Decreased repeat purchase time
  • Improved NPS scores related to checkout ease
